One of the brilliant sections in the Sport Pembrokeshire Awards is the ‘Unsung Hero’ category, which as ever threw up a whole host of brilliant people who put in a tremendous amount of work for their clubs or organisations.
 
The winner was Micky Phillips, who is a great advert for both football and cricket in the county. Well done also to finalists Nigel Roberts, who does so much work at Milford Haven Golf Club, and John Williams of Fishguard & Goodwick R.F.C., who also received beautifully engraved cut-glass engraved mementoes in recognition of their tireless work.
 
Congratulations also to the others who just missed out on the final three – perhaps it might be your turn next year because you all do such wonderful work!
 

Micky just loves to be involved

 
Micky Phillips has played football and cricket for 30 years in Pembrokeshire but has also put a huge amount of effort and dedication off the field  into both sports at county level. Indeed, he was the first person ever to be Hon Treasurer of the Manderwood Pembrokeshire Football League and the Nicholas Pembroke County Cricket Club at the same time over a period of years.
 
He has also served Haverfordwest Cricket Club as an officer and is a Trustee of the club in recognition of his immense service. Micky also enjoys refereeing and although he is unable to officiate in our county because he is an officer of the governing body, he is so determined to put something else back into the game by travelling to Carmarthenshire to help out on Saturdays, and charging just minimal expenses in the process.

Micky Phillips puts many hours into his yeoman work and really is an unsung hero who fully deserves recognition!
 

Nigel sets high standards – on and off the golf course

 
For the past 20 years Nigel Roberts has devoted a lot of his spare time helping guide and develop junior golfers at Milford Haven Golf Club. As Junior Organiser he has helped guide players to take up the game as a career or play top amateur golf and represent at county or Welsh level, including 3 PGA professionals, four Welsh internationals and a huge number of county players.
 
He has run competitions, organised away days (including an important link with Wexford), sorted handicaps, organised finance – and also shown junior players the correct way to behave on the course.
He has influenced many golfers with his words of wisdom and kept the junior section going for 20 years with his infectious enthusiasm.
 

‘Johnny Bach’ is a great man with ‘The Seagulls’

 
John Williams of Fishguard & Goodwick R.F.C. – affectionately known as ‘Jonny Bach’ – deservedly did well in the category of “Unsung Hero”.

John now, in his late 50s, played youth and senior rugby for the club and for over 10 years has been Coach/Manager of the Youth team at the Club. Prior to this he coached the minis for several years. I also understand that he coached/managed the County U 12s at one time.

The 1980s and early 1990s saw success for the Youth team but the past few seasons have been tough with a limited squad.
 
John has stuck to the task with the Youth teams through thick and thin. This has involved chasing up boys Friday night/Saturday morning to play and often being the only person with the team home and away. He always gets on with the job and is not a moaner. He continues to be on the Committee of the Club and was recently made a Life Member. He is well known and respected around the County, especially in Youth rugby circles - a true Club stalwart!
